“Se potessi infilarmi nella cassetta della posta, seguirei la mia lettera fino a Hollywood, fino a Scott, sulla soglia del nostro prossimo futuro”. Francis Scott Fitzgerald, (1896 – 1940) uno dei più grandi scrittori americani del Novecento e Zelda Sayre (1900 – 1948) Flapper maschietta, formarono negli anni Trenta la coppia d’oro della letteratura. Belli e dannati, Scott e Zelda si amarono e si detestarono profondamente e l’autrice in quest’opera di fantasia basata sulla vita di persone reali rievoca la loro passione tormentata. Attingendo alla raccolta di lettere che i due si scambiarono durante il loro corteggiamento, ma anche nei periodi che Zelda trascorse in ospedale (la donna era affetta da bipolarismo) e quando Scott si trovava a Hollywood per lavoro, esce un ritratto inedito della più bella debuttante di Montgomery (Alabama). È la voce di Zelda che ci parla dalle pagine di questa coinvolgente biografia per chiarire che “non siamo mai stati come apparivamo”.

Il libro cult dell’estate è stato pubblicato negli USA quasi cinquant’anni fa, riedito in Italia nella collana Le strade della casa editrice romana nel febbraio 2012 e racconta la storia di un uomo mite, che spesso e volentieri nella sua vita ha deciso di non decidere. “William Stoner si iscrisse all’Università del Missouri nel 1910, all’età di diciannove anni. Otto anni dopo, al culmine della prima guerra mondiale, gli fu conferito il dottorato in Filosofia e ottenne un incarico presso la stessa università, dove restò a insegnare fino alla sua morte, nel 1956”. Le vendite di Stoner fanno di questo libro un autentico caso editoriale non solo nel nostro Paese, dove hanno raggiunto quota 12 edizioni di ristampa con oltre 50mila copie, ma anche in Europa: Gran Bretagna, Francia, Spagna, Israele e Paesi Bassi (150mila copie). È la stonermania che si è sviluppata grazie al passaparola. Che cosa rende così affascinante la lettura della vita minima di un professore universitario apparentemente mediocre? La risposta si trova tra le pagine di un libro assolutamente imperdibile.

In un secolo in cui le distanze sociali sembravano invalicabili solo Rose Bertin, modista della regina, poteva permettersi di ricevere le sue aristocratiche clienti allungata su una chaise longue “degnandole di un semplice cenno del capo”. Nell’introduzione di Giuseppe Scaraffia, presente in questo bel volumetto tradotto da Vittoria Ronchey, lo scrittore e docente universitario rende evidente con efficacia quel mondo vacuo ed effimero che ruotava intorno ai magnifici abiti di Maria Antonietta, Regina di Francia creati da Rose Bertin (1747 – 1813). I Mémoires de Madamoiselle Bertin sur la Reine Marie Antoniette, avec des notes et des éclaircissements, da semplice modista a ministro della moda di Sua Maestà, furono sicuramente redatti da Jacques Peuchet (1758 – 1830), poligrafo, giornalista, enciclopedista, archivista, esperto di economia e di statistica. Una zingara aveva predetto il futuro a Rose “Oh bambina mia! Voi farete una grande fortuna; porteranno il vostro mantello a corte”.
