“Bartali, cattolico devoto, nel corso dell’occupazione tedesca in Italia ha fatto parte di una rete di salvataggio i cui leader sono stati il rabbino di Firenze Nathan Cassuto e l’Arcivescovo della città, cardinale Elia Angelo Dalla Costa. Questa rete ebraico-cristiana, messa in piedi a seguito dell’occupazione tedesca e all’avvio della deportazione degli ebrei, ha salvato centinaia di ebrei locali ed ebrei rifugiati dai territori prima sotto controllo italiano, principalmente in Francia e Yugoslavia”. Così è scritto nel sito ufficiale dello Yad Vashem o Museo dell’Olocausto a Gerusalemme, il memoriale ufficiale di Israele delle vittime ebree dell’Olocausto. A motivo di ciò il campione toscano è stato insignito del prestigioso titolo per aver agito “come corriere della rete, nascondendo falsi documenti e carte nella sua bicicletta e trasportandoli attraverso le città, tutto con la scusa che si stava allenando. Pur a conoscenza dei rischi che la sua vita correva per aiutare gli ebrei, Bartali ha trasferito falsi documenti a vari contatti e tra questi il rabbino Cassuto”. La strada del coraggio è il primo libro che racconta in maniera approfondita la storia meno conosciuta di un uomo che disse a suo figlio Andrea “Non voglio apparire come un eroe. Eroi sono quelli che sono morti, che sono rimasti feriti, che hanno trascorso tanti mesi in prigione”.

“Non ero mai stato al Tavares, in tutta la mia vita. Il Tavares è il ristorante più lussuoso di Lisbona, ci sono specchi ottocenteschi e sedie di velluto, si mangia cucina internazionale, ma anche la cucina portoghese tipica, però sistemata in modo delicato, per esempio tu ordini vongole e maiale, come si fa in Alentejo, e loro te lo cucinano come se fosse un piatto parigino, così almeno mi avevano detto. Ma io non c’ero mai stato, ne avevo solo sentito parlare”. In occasione dei 70 anni che lo scrittore toscano, scomparso a Lisbona il 25 marzo 2012, avrebbe compiuto il 23 settembre la Feltrinelli pubblica il 9 ottobre un racconto postumo scritto in momenti diversi e poi dettato integralmente a Vecchiano nel 1996. Così informa il lettore, una nota editoriale firmata da Maria José de Lancastre Tabucchi e da Carlo Feltrinelli. Nell’estate del 2011 Tabucchi aveva affidato il manoscritto a un’amica ma poi se lo era fatto restituire, perché lo voleva rileggere. Il critico Paolo Mauri definisce Per Isabel “il” racconto cioè “quello che per anni Antonio aveva cercato di scrivere prima ancora di immaginare e del quale dava segnali anche vistosi in altri racconti”. Infatti, i personaggi di Tadeus, Isabel, Magda sono già apparsi nei precedenti scritti di un autore indimenticabile, legato da un amore istintivo e passionale per il Portogallo e la sua saudade. “Era la fine del pomeriggio, ero in anticipo. Entrai in un vecchio caffè che conoscevo, un caffè con biliardi, e mi misi a guardare il gioco”.

Il Rex, il suo comandante, il suo equipaggio

In occasione dell’ottantesimo anniversario della conquista del Nastro Azzurro (riconoscimento che viene attribuito alla nave passeggeri che detiene il record di velocità media di attraversamento dell’Atlantico in regolare servizio e senza scali di rifornimento) da parte del transatlantico Rex, il capitano Zeffiro Rossi presenta il suo nuovo libro dedicato all’impresa del comandante Tarabotto e del suo equipaggio. Il Rex aveva conquistato il Nastro Azzurro nell’agosto 1933 con una velocità media di crociera di 28,92 nodi, strappando il record prima detenuto dal transatlantico tedesco Europa, gemello del Bremen. Il viaggio del record era iniziato alle ore 11,30 del 10 agosto 1933 quando la nave salpò da Genova alla volta di New York, al comando del Capitano Francesco Tarabotto. Durante quel viaggio riuscì a percorrere le 3181 miglia che separano Gibilterra dal faro di Ambrose in 4 giorni, 13 ore e 58 minuti. Il massimo percorso effettuato in un solo giorno fu di 736 miglia alla velocità media di 30,6 nodi. Il record resistette fino al 3 giugno 1935, quando gli fu strappato dal transatlantico francese Normandie di 79.280 tonnellate, al suo viaggio inaugurale. Oltre ai cenni storici e tecnici l’autore si sofferma sugli uomini, sul loro lavoro e con particolare attenzione al riservatissimo gentiluomo comandante Francesco Tarabotto. Ma non solo… nelle pagine del libro, derivate da ricerche autorevoli su altrettanto autorevoli documenti, Rossi va addirittura alla ricerca dei nomi dei mozzi a bordo del Rex. Così oltre a questi ultimi, egli ha ricavato dal ruolo equipaggio del transatlantico l’elenco dei marittimi che durante il memorabile viaggio conquistarono il mitico Nastro Azzurro.
