Nell’ambito della rubrica dedicata ai mestieri dell’editoria, Studio Garamond propone l’intervista a Francesco Palombi, Amministratore Unico della Palombi Editori con sede a Roma in via Gregorio VII, 224.

La casa editrice protagonista nel panorama editoriale romano da quasi un secolo, fondata nel 1914, è oggi una delle più autorevoli voci nel campo dell’editoria artistica, turistica e culturale. “La casa editrice è stata fondata da Mario e Nello Palombi che hanno affittato un precedente stabilimento tipografico Eredi Liebman di un austriaco, Adolf Liebman, originario di Trieste. Lo stabilimento si trovava in quel luogo che noi romani ora chiamiamo Borghetto Flaminio alle spalle del Ministero della Marina. In questa bellissima sede, ai piedi di Villa Strohl Fern siamo stati settant’anni e ora siamo alla terza generazione”.

Dottor Palombi, il vostro motto è “L’arte di guardarsi attorno dal 1914”…
Noi sostanzialmente dal 1914 ci occupiamo esclusivamente di arte, beni culturali, artistici, cataloghi di mostre, architettura. Ci occupiamo di promuovere e di valorizzare il bene storico – artistico italiano con particolare riferimento a quello romano e regionale.

Come si svolge il vostro lavoro?
Il lavoro si svolge nello stesso tipico modo delle case editrici specializzate in arte. Le case editrici specializzate in arte dovrebbero avere al loro interno una redazione che si occupa sia dal punto di vista grafico e sia dal punto di vista redazionale della progettazione grafica, dell’impaginazione, della correzione e della revisione dei testi. Noi facciamo tutto in casa mettendo anche a disposizione la nostra struttura ai curatori di mostre, agli studiosi per lavorare insieme, se necessario, fianco a fianco dei grafici per vedere come è meglio impaginare un determinato catalogo, la guida o la monografia. È un lavoro d’equipe.

Ci descrive le Collane editoriali dedicate a Roma?
Da molti studiosi siamo appellati come la casa editrice delle Guide Rionali di Roma, una collana storica molto importante nata alla fine degli anni Sessanta del 1900, diretta dal Professor Carlo Pietrangeli che all’epoca era Sovrintendente alle Belle Arti del Comune di Roma, così si chiamava il ruolo che ricopriva poi è stato per tanti anni Direttore dei Musei Vaticani. È una collana di quasi 60 guide per 10mila pagine, strada per strada, piazza per piazza, palazzo per palazzo, descrive tutto il patrimonio storico artistico archeologico architettonico presente all’interno dei rioni di Roma. Le altre collane storiche sono le Chiese di Roma illustrate realizzate in collaborazione con l’Istituto Nazionale di Studi Romani. Un’altra collana è Guide argentate itinerari d’arte e di luoghi. Poi ci sono tante altre pubblicazioni al di fuori delle collane che sono tutte monografie che approfondiscono uno o più temi.

Uno degli ultimi cataloghi editi è quello relativo alla mostra Storie del ‘900: Il giardino dei Finzi Contini di Vittorio De Sica che si sta svolgendo presso il Museo Ebraico di Roma (13 ottobre 2013 – 13 febbraio 2014). Qual è il significato profondo di questo allestimento, il primo che il Museo di via Catalana dedica al cinema?
Il Museo è uno dei luoghi meravigliosi di Roma troppo poco conosciuti, anche se ha un discreto numero di visitatori, circa novantamila, soprattutto scolaresche. Il Museo racconta la storia della comunità ebraica romana, il loro patrimonio artistico e storico. La mostra, piccola e raffinata, racconta il celebre film di De Sica che è particolarmente drammatico nei suoi contenuti, perché descrive il dramma delle leggi razziali e i rastrellamenti che videro colpita la comunità ebraica. La mostra è interessante perché offre la possibilità di vedere l’edizione integrale della pellicola capolavoro del 1970, Premio Oscar Miglior Film Straniero nel 1972. L’esposizione non a caso è stata aperta in questi giorni, a ridosso del 16 ottobre, anniversario del rastrellamento nazista nel Ghetto. A tutti noi romani fa impressione camminare tra le strade del Ghetto e ripensare a quello che accadde il 16 ottobre di settant’anni fa. Una tragedia che tutti noi dovremmo aver scolpito nella nostra memoria, perché possa essere da tutti conosciuta e non possa mai più ripetersi.

Quali sono stati i vostri maggiori successi letterari?
Certamente i cataloghi di mostre come il catalogo realizzato un anno è mezzo fa Lux in Arcana. L’archivio segreto vaticano si rivela. La mostra che si è svolta presso i Musei Capitolini è stata l’esposizione più visitata in Italia. Anni fa ricordo il successo del catalogo Icone russe in Vaticano, esposizione tenuta presso il Braccio di Carlo Magno in Piazza San Pietro.

Progetti futuri?
Aspettando di festeggiare tra poco i 100 anni della Palombi Editori cerchiamo di continuare su questa linea che ci vede protagonisti nella sezione dei cataloghi di mostre e in altri ambiti. Abbiamo appena realizzato la guida Roma Movie Walks, passeggiate alla scoperta di Roma attraverso film che hanno fatto la storia del cinema internazionale e che sono stati girati nella Capitale. Cito anche Hostaria Cinema. Gli italiani a tavola nei film. Cinquanta anni di ricette, aneddoti, storie, di Giancarlo Rolandi. Segnalo infine una novità in uscita nei prossimi giorni: un volume dedicato a raccontare quel grande capolavoro della cinematografia mondiale che è Roma città aperta.
