Ci raccontate i vostri primi passi nel mondo della traduzione?
La decisione di dedicarci alla traduzione è nata dal nostro amore per la lettura e per le lingue, la letteratura e la cultura di altri paesi. Abbiamo sempre letto moltissimo fin da bambine, in italiano e nelle lingue che via via imparavamo (entrambe conosciamo inglese, francese, spagnolo e un po’ di portoghese), fino ad assorbirne le sfumature.
Da ventenni abbiamo viaggiato molto all’estero, fermandoci diversi mesi sul posto (Stati Uniti e India per Alessandra; Francia, Inghilterra e più tardi Spagna per Francesca). I legami con la lingua e la cultura dei vari paesi si sono rafforzati e abbiamo anche potuto scoprire tanti libri che in Italia non arrivavano e che scovavamo durante lunghi giri nelle librerie del posto.
Nel frattempo ci siamo iscritte all’Università e Alessandra ha iniziato a tradurre testi tecnici per alcune aziende; poi ha lavorato per uno studio editoriale ed è entrata in contatto con una casa editrice che cercava traduttori e così ha iniziato a tradurre saggistica e linguistica. Mentre Alessandra faceva questo percorso a Milano, a Firenze Francesca iniziava a tradurre articoli accademici per conto dell’Università. Anni più tardi ha conosciuto Alessandra, che l’ha presentata alla casa editrice con cui collaborava più stabilmente. Da lì il percorso è comune e nel 2005 abbiamo fondato il nostro studio editoriale, www.cosierepossi.com. Il giro di editori si è allargato e dalla saggistica siamo approdate alla narrativa.

Come avviene il processo di revisione della traduzione prima della pubblicazione? Che rapporto avete con i vostri collaboratori in tal senso?
La revisione è un passaggio delicatissimo e fondamentale nel cammino di un libro tradotto. Noi in genere ci dividiamo ogni libro a metà e lo traduciamo; poi ci scambiamo la parte tradotta e facciamo un’attenta revisione del testo, confrontandolo riga per riga con l’originale; nella terza fase risolviamo insieme gli ultimi dubbi rimasti e infine stampiamo tutto il testo e lo rileggiamo il numero di volte che occorre per essere soddisfatte della resa italiana (una, due o più). Il processo prende diverse settimane, perciò quando ci viene affidato un testo dobbiamo tenerne conto per rispettare i tempi di consegna.
All’interno della casa editrice, poi, il testo passa a un revisore che, con occhi freschi, apporta altre modifiche. Cerchiamo di essere sempre in contatto con il revisore e di discutere insieme i punti più difficili da rendere in italiano per garantire la migliore resa possibile del testo, che è il principio guida di ogni traduzione.

Ci sono dei traduttori o delle traduzioni che avete amato particolarmente nel corso delle vostre letture, e che vorreste consigliare a chi ci legge?
In Italia ci sono tanti traduttori professionisti eccellenti, molti li conosciamo di persona e sono diventati amici anche sulla base del rispetto per la loro grande professionalità, ma a elencarli si rischia di dimenticarne qualcuno.
Ci limitiamo citare qualche libro in traduzione che abbiamo letto o riletto negli ultimi tempi: Suttree di Cormac McCarthy tradotto da Maurizia Balmelli (la lingua dell’autore è difficilissima, ma Maurizia ha fatto uno splendido lavoro e la resa italiana è davvero poetica), Dracula di Bram Stoker tradotto da Rossella Bernascone (i classici sono sempre una sfida e inoltre Rossella è riuscita a dare la voce giusta ai diversi personaggi).

Che consigli vi sentite di dare a coloro che intendono intraprendere il vostro stesso percorso?
Innanzitutto leggere tantissimo in lingua originale e in italiano per diventare sensibili alle sfumature della lingua; poi imparare a scrivere in un ottimo italiano, seguire un buon corso di studi, visto che adesso esistono i corsi di laurea in traduzione o mediazione linguistica (ai nostri tempi non c’erano!), amare il lavoro, perché altrimenti le difficili condizioni in cui si svolge (dal punto di vista economico e delle tutele) possono scoraggiare, essere molto, molto pignoli, in modo da rispettare il testo che si traduce cercando di renderlo al meglio.

Quali sono gli elementi che “fanno la qualità” di una traduzione?
Quando si traduce è indispensabile rispettare il testo originale. Questo è il concetto di base che si deve tenere a mente quando si intraprende una traduzione.
Parlando di letteratura, questo significa cogliere quanto più possibile l’intenzione dell’autore: perché per descrivere una data scena ha usato proprio quell’aggettivo? Quali implicazioni ha per lui quella parola? Come si lega al suo particolare modo di usare la lingua? Quale reazione voleva suscitare nel lettore? Quanto più riusciamo a rispondere a queste domande, tanto più diventa possibile scegliere il traducente che meglio rispecchia le intenzioni dell’autore.
Per avvicinarsi a questo ideale occorre “ascoltare” il testo che abbiamo davanti, ma anche studiare l’autore e le altre sue opere, utilizzare testi di supporto online e cartacei (ad esempio opere critiche, traduzioni del testo in altre lingue), consultarsi con colleghi madrelingua e non, soprattutto tramite le liste di discussione per traduttori che esistono su Internet.

Secondo voi che tipo di preparazione e competenze è necessario avere per lavorare nel campo della traduzione editoriale? Che consigli dareste a un giovane che si affaccia nel mondo della traduzione?
Oltre ad affinare le attitudini descritte nella risposta n. 4, consiglieremmo di cercare di farsi conoscere dalle case editrici, ad esempio inviando proposte di traduzione, frequentando le fiere di settore (anche quelle piccole), rendendosi visibile su Internet (tramite social network, blog, siti).
È anche importante iscriversi alle associazioni di categoria (noi facciamo parte dell’Associazione Italiana Traduttori e Interpreti e del Sindacato Traduttori Editoriali), per entrare in contatto con altri traduttori e creare delle reti di colleghi, per avere l’opportunità di fare qualcosa in prima persona a favore della categoria e per diventare esperti della professione anche dal punto di vista fiscale, previdenziale, contrattuale. Questo è un aspetto molto importante che a volte i traduttori tendono a trascurare: dobbiamo invece conoscere i nostri diritti e farli rispettare.

C’è un margine di tradimento dell’originale?
Bisogna partire dal presupposto che la traduzione è una riscrittura del testo originale (tant’è vero che noi traduttori siamo definiti autori dalla Legge n.633 del 1941 sul diritto d’autore) e che nel passaggio da una lingua all’altra ci possono sempre essere dei residui traduttivi, ossia delle porzioni di contenuto o di contesto che non è possibile restituire nella lingua d’arrivo. Ad esempio, in un saggio che stiamo traducendo in questo periodo abbiamo incontrato i “tree sitters”, ossia quegli ambientalisti che, per evitare l’abbattimento di determinati porzioni di foresta a scopi commerciali, si accampano sulla cima degli alberi. Come renderlo in italiano, e in maniera sintetica visto che in inglese il concetto è espresso in due sole parole? Se usiamo soltanto la parola “ambientalisti” o “ecologisti” lasciamo un grosso residuo traduttivo, quindi non è sufficiente: dobbiamo fare del nostro meglio per fornire la resa più completa e al tempo stesso più sintetica dell’espressione.
Nel far questo, l’ideale che ci guida è sempre quello presentato nella risposta 5, ossia il rispetto del contenuto e dello stile dell’originale (ciò che l’autore ha voluto dire e come l’ha detto). Se riusciamo a far questo, la questione del “tradimento” passa in secondo piano e in generale la traduzione “dice con altre parole” ciò che era scritto nell’originale, utilizzando uno stile che suscita nel lettore italiano sensazioni e reazioni simili a quelle dell’opera di partenza.

È difficile calarsi in tante voci e tanti stili diversi?
È difficile quanto stimolante. E non solo perché si lavora su autori diversi che scrivono nella stessa lingua, ma anche perché traduciamo autori di lingue diverse (le nostre sono inglese, spagnolo e francese) e a ogni traduzione corrisponde una voce unica, quella dell’autore in un dato periodo storico, in un dato contesto ecc. e, in una prospettiva più ampia, un mondo unico, a seconda del paese dell’autore, con tutto il vissuto e il portato con cui, per forza di cose, l’autore si confronta, sia per contrastarlo o negarlo, sia per assecondarlo e rispecchiarlo nella propria scrittura.
In ogni caso la nostra guida rimane sempre il testo su cui stiamo lavorando, coadiuvato da tutto ciò che sappiamo di quel testo, degli altri scritti dell’autore e del suo percorso letterario: pur nella difficoltà, quindi, abbiamo sempre un faro che ci aiuta nelle scelte, riga dopo riga.

C’è oggi un po’ di visibilità in più, per i traduttori, rispetto al passato e qual è il rapporto fra traduttore e autore?
Oggi i traduttori sono un po’ più visibili al grande pubblico rispetto al passato: si parla di noi sui media soprattutto grazie al prezioso lavoro svolto dal Sindacato Traduttori Editoriali e dall’Associazione Italiana Traduttori e Interpreti. Se ne parla di più, ma non è ancora abbastanza: permane in generale una scarsa consapevolezza, da parte del pubblico dei media e persino degli stessi editori, che il lavoro dei traduttori è un contributo necessario e fondamentale allo scambio culturale tra i popoli (necessario perché da noi i lettori in grado di affrontare un’opera letteraria in lingua originale non sono molti). Inoltre non tutti hanno ancora compreso che il traduttore è un professionista che ha alle spalle decenni di letture, una conoscenza approfondita della lingua straniera e della propria, un bagaglio di studi, un’attività continua di aggiornamento professionale. E che come tale merita di essere riconosciuto sia con la citazione del nome (che spesso viene omessa) nelle recensioni dei libri e in tutte le sedi previste dalla Legge 633/41 sul diritto d’autore sia, cosa per nulla secondaria, con adeguati compensi economici.
Quanto al rapporto fra traduttore e autore, è molto variabile e in genere dipende dall’autore: alcuni sono molto disponibili a fornire spiegazioni sui propri testi, altri vivono con diffidenza il fatto che la loro opera venga tradotta in altre lingue e possono essere più restii. Altri ancora, e non è un problema trascurabile, sono defunti da tempo… il che rende molto più difficile per i traduttori sciogliere eventuali dubbi relativi al testo.
